Kratom (Mitragyna speciose) is becoming a concern after BNN announced it would include this tropical plant as a Group I illegal drug. Traditionally, kratom is used as a medicinal plant in Kalimantan and another mainland Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, Thailand, and Myanmar.

A scientific study revealed kratom has become a plant that is consumed by the people of southern Thailand and northern Malaysia. Because kratom is believed to help reduce pain, relax, prevent fatigue, and help opium addicts to stop.

One is the study of experts from the University of Tanjungpura, Pontianak, which highlighted how kratom leaves can reduce pain or play an antinociceptive effect on Swiss male mice.

The author also explained, based on phytochemical screening results, it was stated that the methanol extract in kratom leaves contained secondary metabolites of the alkaloids, flacanoids, steroids/terpenoids, phenols, and saponins groups.
