Kratom (Mitragyna speciose) is becoming a concern after BNN announced it would include this tropical plant as a Group I illegal drug. Traditionally, kratom is used as a medicinal plant in Kalimantan and another mainland Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, Thailand, and Myanmar.
A scientific study revealed kratom has become a plant that is consumed by the people of southern Thailand and northern Malaysia. Because kratom is believed to help reduce pain, relax, prevent fatigue, and help opium addicts to stop.
Many national and international experts also paid attention to Kratom through published scientific journals.
One is the study of experts from the University of Tanjungpura, Pontianak, which highlighted how kratom leaves can reduce pain or play an antinociceptive effect on Swiss male mice.
In a study conducted by Sri Luliana and colleagues, the team used a hot plate test to conduct the test. The male mice were divided into five groups, namely the normal group induced 0.5% CMC Na, the morphine group at a dose of 5.46 mg / kgBW, the kratom leaf dichloromethane fraction group at a dose of 70, 140 and 280 mg / kgBB respectively.
The team then observed changes in behavior in mice for 120 minutes. In the research abstract written, the response of mice in the form of jumping, licking, and pulling the leg backward was observed as a parameter.
“One Way ANOVA and Post Hoc LSD Test results show that the antinociceptive activity of the dichloromethane fraction at doses of 70 (51%), 140 (81%), and 280 mg / kgBB (86%) is significantly different from the normal group,” the authors wrote. abstract of their report.
“The conclusion of this study is that the kratom leaf dichloromethane fraction has antinociceptive (pain relief) activity. The kratom leaf dichloromethane fraction dose 3 (280 mg / kg body weight) has a higher power percentage than dose 1 (70 mg / kg body weight) and dose 2 (140 mg / kg body weight) mg / kgBB), “the authors added.
The author also explained, based on phytochemical screening results, it was stated that the methanol extract in kratom leaves contained secondary metabolites of the alkaloids, flacanoids, steroids/terpenoids, phenols, and saponins groups.
The results of screening of dichloromethane fraction of kratom leaf contain secondary metabolites of alkaloids, steroids/terpenoids and saponins. “The results of this study support the results of previous studies which stated that kratom leaf methanol extracts contain high concentrations of secondary metabolites of alkaloids and flavonoids, while tannins and steroids are detected with low concentrations,” the authors said.
